10 Reasons why Tanning is Good for You!
Of course we have to be aware of the possible risks and damages from sun (especially for tanners, who overexpose themselves), but we can't be led to believe that sun doesn't do anything good. :) Sunlight is the base for life!
Most of us start smiling when the sun comes out, so it's no surprise that a little sunshine everyday can boost your mood and also help prevent and/or help serious ailments.
For years we have been told to cover up in the sun to cut the risk of getting skin cancer. But now it has come to light that sun is actually good for the body.
Recent studies have shown that a sensible amount of UV light reduces your risk of several cancers and health conditions. It's all thanks to Vitamin D, which is made through our bodies through the action of UVB rays on our skin.
Professor Michael Holick of Boston University School of Medicine is the author of "The UV Advantage" book. "We get about 90 to 95% of our vitamin D from the sun," says Holick.
He advises people should get 5 to 15 minutes of sun exposure three times a week to boost vitamin D levels.
Here are the top 10 ways in which the sun can IMPROVE your health:
1. It cheers you up.
Sunshine boosts levels of serotonin-the body's natural "happy hormone" That's why we tend to feel more energetic when the sun shines. Regular sun can ward off moderate depression.
2. Reduces heart disease.
A study in the British Medical Journal showed that people in the UK are more likely to die of heart disease in winter than summer, which is believed to be caused by lower levels of Vitamin D, or UV light during those months. It also depends where you live. Blackpool, England has 27% more hours of sunshine every year than Burnley, England. There are 9% fewer deaths in Blackpool from coronary heart disease every year.
3. Helps prevent diabetes
Vitamin D may help prevent the onset of diabetes according to a study in Finland. The study showed that children who were given a Vitamin D supplement for several years had an 80% lower risk of developing Type I diabetes.
4. Beats SAD
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is depression specifically caused by lack of sunlight. Tanning or light therapy is used to treat people with low to moderate SAD.
5. Helps prevent MS
Multiple Sclerosis is a disease of the central nervous system, leading to tremors & even paralysis. While the cause is not known, scientists have noted that exposure to sunlight in childhood appears to dramatically reduce the risk of developing MS. They have also discovered that the occurrence of MS is especially low in countries that have more sunlight per year.
6. Prevents Cavities
The sun could help keep your teeth strong. A dental study found the prevalence of cavities was greater in children from Scotland than in Wales. The only striking difference is Wales has an average of more sunshine each year.
7. Relieves aches & pains
Being out in the sun helps to warm the body's muscles & ease stiffness, which reduces the pain caused by inflammatory conditions such as arthritis.
8. Reduces risk of cancers
Although overexposure to the sun can increase your chance of skin cancer, Vitamin D provided by sunlight can actually help significantly reduce risk of other types of cancer.
A study carried out by the US National Cancer Institute found that people exposed to high levels of sunlight were less likely to die from breast & colon cancer. A similar effect was seen in bladder, esophagus and stomach cancers.
9. Gives you more energy.
Melatonin is produced by UV rays. It is a chemical that regulates sleep, so having lower levels of this hormone in your body gives you more energy. This is why in summer; people need less sleep than usual, but still feel livelier.
10. Helps skin conditions
Exposure to the sun can help heal conditions such as psoriasis, acne and eczema. Regular controlled exposure is often prescribed for sufferers of these ailments.
NEVER overdo the sun. Excessive burning & overexposure can increase your risk of skin cancer. It's all about moderation. Vitamin D is produced by UV light, whether natural or produced by tanning lamps.
